Biometrics in orthodontics, measured matters!!!

Varun Kunte

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) has been an Enigma in Medical science. This disorder consists of plethora of symptoms which include TMJ clicks, Myofacial Pain, Headaches, neck pain, back pain and many more. The debate about the etiology and pathogenesis is raging on since decades. So much that; there are different schools of thought about diagnosis and management of TMD.
Number of research studies link orthodontic treatment with TMD. Does this hold any value? Can the association be proven? What if we have technology with which we can measure occlusal forces, muscle readings, TMJ clicking Pre and post orthodontic treatment? With the advent of biometrics, we have ushered into a new era. Sophisticated technology like Tuscan EMG JVA Jaw trackers are available with us which will measure all parameters of orthodontic treatment. This will not only prevent for any TMD from happening but also it will perfect orthodontic treatment result by ensuring uniform force distribution, coordination between occlusal, muscles & TMJ. Thus, it will result in a smaller number of relapse cases.
Many research studies are based on concepts which change with due course of time. Measured Orthodontics with Biometric equipment will enhance standard of care for all patients. Objective data will make help clinicians render treatments with improved success rate and will rule out subjective bias. Measured Matters!!!
